Deciphering the Speech of Our Children

All too often, while our child is talking, his words whiz from one of our ears through the other, but we still have not heard what he is trying to express. For example, your seventh grade daughter announces, "I'm not inviting friends over anymore." Is she trying to say that she no longer has any friends to invite? Or is she telling you that she's embarrassed that the house is messy and disheveled. Or your ninth grade son says, "There's nothing wrong with smoking." Is he trying to assert his power? Be one of the "gang?" Or is he in the mood of being contrary? It's not enough to merely hear; we must listen, perceive and understand.

How do we become more perceptive?

For starters, listen with your whole body. You should stop washing the dishes or balancing the checkbook. Focus. Make eye contact. And really listen. You'll be surprised at what you discover.

While listening, make use of the active listening skills you've mastered.

Reflect your child's feelings and message.
Repeat the information you've heard back to your child to ensure that you've understood him correctly. This will reassure the child that you have heard him and understood him or give him the opportunity to clarify his needs in case of error.
Throughout the conversation, listen non-judgmentally. All too often, we're too busy formulating responses instead of focusing on the other person's words. That turns the conversation into a rebuttal. Be accepting. You will make your home a safe place for open conversation.

Deciphering the Actions

Besides understanding our child's verbal messages, we also must decode his unspoken messages, sent to us via his actions. Children don't act out of character without reason. As parents, it is our obligation to try to discover the motive behind our child's irregular behavior.

For example, your child comes home from school unusually quiet. Is he angry or sad about something that happened in school?

During mealtime, your child is barking, criticizing and talking with impatience. Is he angry or annoyed, and about what?

Your child is jumpy and wild. He may be excited about an event that has happened or will happen.

Your child is feeling slow and lazy. He may be tired or in need of a break.

Your child is fighting with his siblings. He doesn't feel noticed, accepted or loved, so he may therefore provoke others.

Your child is hurting others. He may be feeing hurt or jealous.

A child acts out when he is unhappy. There is always a trigger, and it is our responsibility to identify it. There are four mistaken goals of behavior, attention, power, revenge and inadequacy. Usually, a child's behavior is a reflection of inner emotions. Behaviors are supposed to be red flags, telling us to probe deeper. When a parent assesses a child based entirely on external factors, he often misses the punch line. It's like a doctor who pronounces a diagnosis after observing his patient's external symptoms.

It's Hard to Find Reliable Sources on the 2012 Predictions Phenomenon

What we know is very little, and what has been projected on rather shaky assumptions is unfortunately quite extensive. And some of the assumptions by those who would debunk the "predictions," are as weak as many of those made by the prognosticating prophets of doom. If profiteering, pompous ego building, and thorough indoctrination in various mindsets were all eliminated, there would be precious little information out there on this subject.

Some of the debunkers are as lacking in information as the most rabid of prognosticators. But that has not stopped them from their process of "authoritatively" debunking that, about which they have no more knowledge than anyone else.

One particular day near the end of December 2012 could very well be when we see the end of the world. But so could tomorrow for that matter. And so might yesterday have been. The debunkers are, by and large, just playing the odds by saying it is an unlikely event for December 21. And, of course, they are justified in the assumption (that is, their assessment of the odds) because such predictions have come and gone in the past, and this one is backed up by almost no serious evidence that anything unusual should be expected. But most of the time the debunkers fail to acknowledge the one caveat in that last sentence. That would be the word, "almost," describing a "nearly" complete lack of evidence for expecting anything unusual.

A great deal of effort has been marshaled in assembling an unusually wide variety of loose strands of vaguely (sometimes wildly) predictive verbiage about the tendencies of our culture and of our current planetary trends. All of this has been tied together in an almost mystical fashion, and targeted by some unexplained coincidental mechanism, to correspond to the only specific date that any of these assertions has determined. That date, of course, is December 21, 2012, which was given to us in an indirect form by the ancient Maya of Central/South America.

The date comes to us from a 2,500-year-old calendar. Is that calendar remarkable in any way? Yes, certainly, it is at least remarkable. For one thing, it has endured for over 2,000 years. For another, it is poignantly terminated at a date that corresponds to our December 21, 2012. That point alone makes it particularly interesting for our point of view here in the early 21st century. But there are numerous reasons for considering this calendar to be remarkable.

What may be most remarkable is the amount of information that has been related to that December date, just because the Mayan Long-Count Calendar ended on what is apparently that day. And running a close second in the remarkability category, might possibly be the amount of energy that has been expended on debunking the assertions made about that date's meaningfulness. Arguably, too much has been made of the whole affair. But there is that nagging perception that this entire corpus of tiring literature is about something as monumental as... yes, the end of the world. That subject should be something of at least marginal interest to anyone with a brain and currently living on this planet.

Discovering Purpose and Clarifying Your Vision

The first month of the New Year is well on its way to being over. How are you doing with keeping your commitments, to carry out the daily activities you need to do, to achieve your goals? Have you started this New Year the same way you have always done in the past, with a commitment to reinvent yourself and to finally live your greater life purpose? Yet by the middle of January, things feel like they are falling apart and you are once again so wrapped up in doing to survive, that getting to actually carrying out the tasks you need to do to achieve your goals, is a distant memory.

The challenge you face and the reason you seem to lose momentum every year is that you have not really discovered your true life or higher purpose. In other words you do not have a clear vision of what is important to you and more importantly why achieving this really matters. Until you know why making time for and ensuring that you keep all the goal activity commitments you make, is important to you. Other things will always be viewed as a higher priority to you and you will gradually neglect your goal activities.

Your purpose, vision or reason why you want to achieve something, must become really compelling and be construed as more important or as important as all the other activities you carry out each day. Or the things that you see as more important will, over time, flow into your day, almost unnoticed to replace your goal achieving activities. You will always find time to carry out the activities you see as your most important tasks for the day, at the expense of anything that you subconsciously view as less important.

We all have a higher purpose and deep down we all know what it is. The challenge is to uncover yours and to then articulate it into a clear vision or purpose statement, which will inspire you. Discovering your life purpose and formulating a vision statement that clearly defines why achieving anything is really important to you, is not an event, it is a process.

I want you to start this process by exploring your life, where you begin to understand and read the clues that are visible all around you, clues that will gradually unlock and reveal your higher purpose or reason for being.

Action Idea: Scan your life and explore all the actions you are taking or have taken that have really inspired you. Try to uncover the common thread in all of them, this will begin to point you in a meaningful direction and help you to begin the process of discovering your higher purpose: Explore all the activities that have been or are the most meaningful, inspiring and make you feel the most alive and synthesize these...

What were you doing when you felt the most inspired or driven?
Where are your skills most profound?
What inspired you most when you were taking these actions?
All the actions you take, which make you feel good and you feel passionate about doing; are directing toward discovering and formalising your vision. When you experience feelings of gratitude or any strong positive emotion, you are on track and moving toward discovering your higher purpose. Pay close attention to those moments they are incredible clues. Living a life of meaning and purpose is all about doing what you love and loving what you do.

Action Idea:

Look back over your life and see who your heroes have been. What they do or did is an incredible clue to help you discover your life purpose.
What have you studied most or what do you enjoy studying most?
What do you think about most?
What in your environment inspires you the most?
Integrate all of these and search for a common thread. Each of the answers you come up with should give you a massive clue and will help you to uncover your higher purpose.

Until you have a clear vision and know why achieving your goals and dreams is important to you. You will not place a high enough importance on carrying out the daily activities you need to do, to achieve your goals. Everything else will be seen as more important and you will relegate your goal achieving activities to the bottom of your daily to-do list. Uncovering and discovering your higher purpose, formulating a vision and understanding why your goals are really important to you, is one of the most crucial things you must do. Invest the time today to start this process; the results you will enjoy will be well worth the effort.
